Research Question: Would an increase in EC activities provide safer environment for students? Contributed by: Sean Scott JStor Article
In my article the author argues that students are geared to be interested in drug activities and sex for the most part but an increase in nonacademic activities will help. Although not all students participate in the negative activities programs with a positive attitude help the students stay out of trouble the article interviews 75 students and most show a lack of interest in school but show interest in outside activities. So if linking the two together and making lass more fun and having the students take classes they like it will be a positive correlation with the grades. In the argument it also discusses how in some activities like sports you must have certain GPA to play which challenges the kid mentally making it hard for some students but giving other students a chance to go to college and keep good grades by the want to play sports. After interviewing students the author came to a pretty good conclusion that more guys do nonacademic activities but do it for fun while girls do it for future career plans and the main difference between special education students and the average students is self esteem and confidence.
Reaction:
This was a good article because it broke down the difference in success, and attitude with school. It showed that the more people that played sports were likely to stay in school and get better grades. That was not a surprise because that was how it was in high school with my friends. If they quit the team or weren't on it any more they were more likely to get in trouble an didn't are about their grades as much. With my school it was hard because of transportation and a lot of people didn't like catching the city bus home, so it would come back to funding. I like this article because explained a lot of things about people back at home and with that information you learn what needs to become and how you could help make a change.

Summary:
This author discusses how in Guam they believe that if given the opportunity of more extracurricular activities there would be less physical fights in the environment. The author argues that extracurricular activities give students more social skills and positive attitudes to interact with others therefore not having to resort to violence. So they go to these schools in Guam and give out a survey where the students participate and then they correlate it with the violence and who would and wants to participate in different activities. Results came back the more males were aggressive and got into fights but would not be in so many fights if they had an outlet to go to such as sports etc.
Reaction:
I wasn't going to use this article because of the location but i think it is al relevant wherever you go in the world. If kids are occupied by an activity it keeps them from rifting into other options. This article was good because it talked about how activities were directly correlated with the negative behavior at its high school. The bad thing was it was just at the school o it was more of secluded area that was being noted. I like how they broke it down to gender
too, it showed that men were more aggressive and more likely to get in trouble without out of school activities.

Summary:
In this article of a local newspaper much like the other entries their is a lack of activities in their county but the main problem is the age group that it lacks for. Ages between 3 and 13 have plenty to do but the age group lacking are the high schoolers who seem to need it the most. So, KCAP Knox County Are Project decided to conduct a survey because they wanted to give information that will be useful to teachers, families and counselors and help prevent juvenile delinquency. They sent out about 160 surveys and received 111 back from business and schools etc. and the results showed that their were plenty of activities for younger children but not for older children. Receiving this information and then formulating it into 176 page booklet was a little too much for parents so now they plan on trying to make a little booklet that will in turn let parents know of the activities going on in different ares to help parents out.
Reaction:
I thought this article was a good one because i really hit my subject and question well. It also showed a different way to solve the problem by them wanting to make little pamphlets for the county. I realized that was also a true situation around a lot of places that it is just easier to have more activities for the younger kids and when you get older there are less activities for you to get into. But it is a good thing to inform parents and students because it will lower the juvenile delinquency in tha area like it was said. I think it will be effective because unlike some of the other article itthis one told you the amount of surveys handed out and returned. Some surveys don't tell you the amount that was answered making their data ore of a questionable source.

Summary:
This article talked about the drop out rats in schools and what was the causes of it. It was separated by race, gender, and activities. it showed like other articles that males are more likely to drop out. And depending on the activity you did you were more likely to stay in school. Sports players were the most efficient in the information, hey stayed in school more than most. While others who didn’t do anything and same fine arts students did drop out. They conducted the research by having schools fill out surveys and then received them and had specialist do the research and then made graphs so that they could explain the information in their article.
Reaction:
Very informative article in my opinion, not really on my subject but it did help with my research. I thought it presented well argued facts and had the nformation to back it up too. So the sources was valid, but some of the information seemed a ittle frfetched. But overall an really good article but more of an artice fo Andreas question instead of mine.

Summary:
This article was very informative but it lacked the info i needed pertaining to my argument. Yes, it was about making a safer environment but like most of them it talked about how to make school safer but it didn't mention extracurricular activities. This article talked about the zero tolerance policy and analyzed it from every point of view. It broke it down to race and how it seems as if blacks are highly argetd and effected more from it by being thrown out of school. Also it looked at it from an administrator's point of view too, and how some take it too far lik how a principal made these kids cut the toy guns off these little figurines because of the rules just taking thing a step too far. Then it was looked at overall to see if it was really effective or is it too hard and makes it difficult for students to stay in school.
Reaction:
I thought this was a very ood article not really on my subject or where i was trying to go with it but it was so interesting that i had to keep reading. Plus i wanted to have an example of how they are trying to make schools safer and how a lot of it is done with extacurricular activities. It also surprised me because they said blacks were targeted in the zero tolerance policy in New Jersey high school and i didnt know that so that was very interesting information. Verey good and iformative article i picked up a lot of information and it helpe me with my research quite a bit.
